Reading Counts Donations

Our first Reading Counts drawing will be held on Tuesday, December 15.  This drawing will be held for those students who have earned tickets through various activities such as book blogs, scavenger hunts and meeting their RC goals.  For this particular drawing we are in need of gift cards (ie. book stores, Blockbuster, Subway etc.)  or while you are out shopping those after Thanksgiving sales if you see something we would love that too.  Please bring your donations to the Library.  Thank you for your help and remember that READING COUNTS AT GEORGETOWN!!!

Funding Crisis

Time is running out.  Our Governor and legislative leaders in Lansing are proposing devastating cuts to public education.  In addition to the $165 per pupil cut to all public schools, the State Budget Director has notified school leaders another $127 per pupil cut is coming in less than 30 days.  The only way this will not happen is if our Governor and legislators can agree to a funding solution addressing the revenue shortfall.  To find out how to help prevent this funding crisis, please listen to my message and visit the links here:   FUNDING CRISIS

If you are thinking about joining the Million Words Club here is a very easy way to count words in your chapter book.
1. Pick a page in your book.
2. Count how many words are on one line.
3. Count how many lines on that page.
4. Count how pages in the whole book.
5. Take those three numbers and multiply them.
6. That total is the approximate number of words in your chapter book. You can put that number on your Million Words Club Log Form.

If you have ever dreamed of being a millionaire, now is your chance.  All students will have the opportunity to become a member of this club if they succeed in reading for 1,000,000 words this school year.  Million Words Back

Million Words Front

As a member of the MILLION WORDs club, each member will have their name on the MILLIONAIRE’s BOARD (display case in our rotunda) and receive a very cool, totally awesome t-shirt.  Each student must keep track of the total words read on this form:  Million Words Club Form

Completed forms are turned into Mrs. VandenBerg, our school librarian.

We are hopeful that this provides incentive to read for those students who may be burned out with Reading Counts quizzes.   With the help of Mrs. Roon (Reading Counts Chair) and Mrs. VandenBerg (Librarian), we have made changes to our Reading Counts program this school year.  For those who still  enjoy the Reading Counts program, this gives them yet another way to be rewarded for reading.

Links to help you calculate words in books are found on the right under READING COUNTs.  Quick links can be found here:  Ren Learning and   Scholastic e-Catalog.

What are Book Blogs?

What are book blogs you ask?  They are a great way to earn points for books that we don’t have quizzes on.

Not only can you earn points,  you can get a ticket with your name on it for the drawing to be held in December.   You just read a book (that is NOT reading counts), go to the link on this page that says Book Blog form,  fill it out and hit submit.   Your form comes to me in my emails.  I will put it in paragraph form, send it to your teacher for your classroom blog, post it in the Library, issue you a ticket, and give you points to go towards your goal.  This is something you can do at home too.  Have fun!!!

If your student comes home and says he couldn’t take a quiz on his/her book today that is because the Reading Counts program was down today.  The Tech office has been working on it and will hopefully have it up and running by tomorrow.
